Top channels news: October’s 4th week

During the fourth week the share of direct speech allocated to the ruling power is three times bigger than that of the opposition; during the third week it was two times bigger

Inter channel features the largest share of news reports including two viewpoints

In October the ministries of the interior and defense remain the most frequently mentioned institutions; the leaders of attention among political associations are Party of Regions and Batkivshchyna

Attention (except attention to the President of Ukraine) to Party of Regions’ representatives was 10% more than that to Batkivshchyna; during the previous week attention was equal

Inter and TVi featured the most balanced attention and direct speech allocated to political parties

Political news. During the fourth week of October 39% of news reports were related to political events in Ukraine (the 1st week - 30%, the 2nd week - 27%, the 3rd week - 34%). Within October UT-1 featured the largest share of them – 1st week - 47%, 2nd week - 41%, 3rd week - 54%, 4th week - 61%. 1+1 channel had 65% of non-political reports (3rd week - 70%).

The share of the reports by the parties press centers during the 1st and 3rd weeks was – 14% (2nd week - 10%). The share of the reports on elections constituted 35% (1st week - 20%, 2nd week - 24%, 3rd week - 26%). Half (51%) of UT—1 and Inter’ news reports were on elections.

Standards of news. 15% of news reports included several viewpoints (1st week - 17%, 2nd week 16%, 3rd week - 17%). Inter had the largest share – 28% (3rd week - 32%). During the fourth week two viewpoints upon political events are provided in 14% of reports (1st week - 18%, 2nd week - 12%, 3rd week -19%). Inter featured the largest share. 19 key events were discussed in the news from several viewpoints (1st week - 21, 2nd week - 20, 3rd week - 21). The differing viewpoints were provided regarding the lawsuit filed by N. Korolevska on protecting her business reputation, the tragedy in KARAVAN mall, kidnapping of the Russian opposition activist.

48% of the news reports (1st week - 51%, 2nd week - 52%, 3rd week - 48%) were provided in negative and conflict contexts (2nd week of September - 47%, in August - 50%, in June - 42%, in April - 50%, in February - 55%). TVi had the largest share (70%, the previous week - 60%) followed by Inter (64%, the previous week - 69%). Novy channel had the smallest share of negative and conflict context – 18%; during the other weeks of October UT-1 had the smallest share: 14% - 1st week, 37% - 2nd week, 21% - 3rd week). Positive context is rare; STB had the highest share (14%, the previous week- 7%).

Political institutions, parties and personalities. 28% of all the mentions about politicians belong to the Party of Regions (the 1st week of October - 33%, 2nd week - 38%, 3rd week - 28%), followed by Batkivshchyna – 18% (1st week - 18%, 2nd week - 12%, 3rd week - 30%), UDAR and Ukraine-Forward - 4% , Communist Party of Ukraine - 3%, Svoboda - 2%. The attention to Batkivshchyna exceeds that of the Party of Regions at the 5th Channel (26% vs. 14%) and at TVi (28% vs. 25%). CPU has the highest rating of attention at Inter – 6% (during the first week – at Inter and 1+1: 12% each, during the 2nd week – UT-1 – 7%, 3rd week - СТБ –5%, UDAR was mostly covered by ICTV – 10% (the previous week also at ICTV - 11%); Ukraine-Forward had the highest share of attention at Novy Channel and TRC Ukraine – 9% each (3rd week – at STB – 7%) , Svoboda - 1+1 (4%, during the third week – at STB – 5%). During the fourth week attention to the ruling coalition representatives is two times more than that to the opposition – 53% vs. 26%, during the 3rd week it was almost equal – 50% vs. 42%, whereas during the second week it was three times bigger (64% vs. 21% ), during the 1st week – 2.5 times (63% vs. 25%).

Direct speech. On the eve of the elections 37% of the direct speech combined was allocated to President Yanukovych (21%, 14% - the previous week) and Prime Minister Azarov – 16%, whereas during three previous weeks its share was 27%. 8% of the direct speech was allocated to A. Yatsenyuk, 6% to V. Klychko, 4% to P. Symonenko and N. Korolevska. Generally, 28% of the direct speech was allocated to the representatives of the Party of Regions (1st week - 36%, 2nd week - 39%, 3rd week - 36%), Batkivshchyna - 12% (1st and the 2nd week - 11%, 3rd week - 18%), UDAR - 5% (1st and 2nd weeks - 5%, 3rd week - 7%), CPU - 4%, Ukraine-Forward - 3% and “Svoboda” - 1%. TVi news allocated 38% of direct speech to Batkivshchyna politicians and 27% - to the Party of Regions’ representatives. STB news allocated 59% of the direct speech to the President and the representatives of Party of Regions (during the previous weeks UT-1 had the highest share: 1st week – 58%, 2nd week – 53%, 3rd week – 63%). UDAR had the highest share of direct speech at Inter – 12% (the previous week – ICTV – 16%), CPU also had the highest share at Inter – 8%, Ukraine-Forward – at TRC Ukraine (13%, during the previous week at the same channel – 6%), “Svoboda” – at Inter and UT-1 – 2% each (during the 3rd week - STB – 6%). During the fourth week of October the direct speech share of the ruling government’s representatives was 3 times bigger than that of the opposition, and during the first two weeks it was 4.3 times bigger.

Monitoring research was carried out by the Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP) with participation of scientists of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine using the method of content analysis of prime-time news programs of 9 leading Ukrainian TV channels – Inter, 1+1, Novy Kanal, “Ukrayna”, SТB, ICTV, Pershy Natsionalny, 5th channel and TVi.
