Vloggers can lose attention when they post less frequently than once in two weeks. This was discussed on June 1-2 at the webinar “Blogger’s Infotainment during the Quarantine. How to Avoid Fakes and Create High-Quality Content” The event was organized by the Academy of Ukrainian Press with the support of Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.
The best solution for a beginner video blogger is to post once a week.
One should just schedule 52 topics for the whole year, each one to be posted once a week. It may only seem an overwhelming task at first sight. In fact, this is performed easily, instantly and makes a good basis for the preparation of future content.
“We stand for creation of high-quality content,” says Prof. Valeriy Ivanov, Doctor of Science, President at the Academy of Ukrainian Press, “Regular release of publications, responsibility for the content, and countering misinformation are those things we want to cultivate among the participants of our webinars.”
We have introduced and explained what is filming and editing software, correct sequence of frames, the ideas for a future plot, and participants have practiced all this while doing their home assignment.
“Practical part, group discussions, home assignments for improving one’s knowledge are thoughtfully designed in order to conduct our trainings online,” explains Andrii Kovalenko, executive manager at AUP, “However, it is not possible to carry out all the activities online, therefore we are carefully considering all possible content, looking for some interesting approaches and the ways of presenting. And obviously, we are working out new topics for the webinars to meet the requirements of our audience.”
It was the first attempt for many participants to film a video on their own. “Newcomers” made some mistakes: duplicate frames, drawn out storyline, no sound or wrong angle. But many were saved by “kitties”. Choosing house pets as a central theme and their critical view on their owners’ life not just entertains but encourages critically to assess our daily routine.
“We’ve been working with multiple organizations engaged in development of open society with liberal ideas,” shares his opinion Volodymyr Oliinyk, Foundation’s project coordinator, “Here belong NGOs, political parties and think tanks. We are pleased to work with such a significant partner as the Academy of Ukrainian Press in the field of media development. Countering populism and fakes appears to be a real challenge for open society at this time. The more we know about that and train people to combat these processes, the better it is for our citizens.”
Fun, fear and sensation can always be countered by infotainment available in an interesting form and giving an answer to the questions: “What do I need to know?” and “Why do I need to know that?”
The Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP) promotes critical and informed media consumption, encourages following the standards of journalism, and explains the fundamentals of media literacy to teachers, children and adults.
