On November 26-27, 2024, the Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP), with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, held its eighth webinar titled "Artificial Intelligence and Media Literacy: Tools and Recommendations." The event served as a platform for discussing modern challenges and opportunities related to the use of AI in the media sector.
Key Highlights of the Webinar:
🔹 The Role of AI in the Modern World
Valeriy Ivanov, President of AUP, Doctor of Philology, and Professor, emphasized the importance of a responsible approach to artificial intelligence:
"The engagement of the audience is inspiring. Language models or AI are among the most pressing topics today. They can both assist and distort perceptions of reality. We are promoting conscious mastery of this powerful tool."
🔹 Social Media Algorithms and Media Literacy
Maksym Zaporozhchenko, Manager of AUP’s Media Education Programs, highlighted the impact of AI algorithms on the information landscape:
"AI influences our information space daily, even without our direct involvement, particularly through social media algorithms. Every like, repost, comment, or view we make sends a signal to neural networks about what content to show us next. Our activity on social media is a valuable resource that must be managed wisely."
🔹 Transforming the World with Large Language Models
Andriy Yurychko, media trainer, journalist, Ph.D. in Philology, and lecturer at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, noted the unprecedented pace of change driven by AI development:
"Large language models are transforming the world not step by step but at a sprint. We demonstrate how they work, what they can currently deliver, and what remains a challenge for the future."
Prospects and Next Steps:
On December 3-4, AUP will host its final webinar of 2024. Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and receive practical recommendations on integrating AI into education and media literacy.
