Media fundamentals course for Grade 8 (9) (introductory course) – the winner of the call for applications held by the Academy of Ukrainian Press (authors: Pavlo Kovalenko, Zaporizhya Sichovy Boarding School, media culture teacher, and Oleksandr Mokrohuz, PhD, Chernhiv Oblast Continuing Pedagogic Education Institute, Department of Social Disciplines, associate professor) – was endorsed by the Academic and Methodology Committee on Journalism and Information (Academic and Methodology Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine) and adopted by the Institute for Innovative Technologies and Contents of Education, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. This is the first media literacy fundamentals course, which was officially endorsed.
The course was developed in compliance with a call for applications announced. The Academy of Ukrainian Press in cooperation with the Institute of Innovative Technologies and Contents of Education as well as Institute for Social and Political Psychology, National Academy of Pedagogic Sciences of Ukraine, announced a call for applications on drafting a media education course for Grade 8 with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation. 6 concept notes were submitted from various regions of Ukraine. The winners were invited to develop a full-fledged course.

Humenyuk, Center for Media Initiatives, director, D. R. Dutsyk, Mediasapiens, editor-in-chief, Kyiv-Mohyla School of Journalism professor, media expert, H. O. Usatenko, Europe XXI Foundation, President.
V. Melezhyk, the CFA Committee member, noted in the course of the Committee’s meeting: “I think it is the Concept Note 4 which suits best to the objectives of the CFA, particularly: to reveal the logic of media world a high school student faces in everyday life (seeking to develop the skills of understanding up-to-date means to cover events; to build an individual esthetic taste, moral and social filters to conceive the information). However, I would like to mention that each submitted concept featured individual ideas and interesting objectives setting, which can be applicable while drafting future curricula”.
It may be noted that the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine recommended (by the Letter #1/9-226 of March 29, 2013) to introduce Media Literacy Fundamentals course into optional courses section of high schools’ curricula.
Currently this course may be officially applied for teaching Media Literacy Fundamentals subject.
