23.08.2019

On August 13-14, 2019 the Academy of Ukrainian Press with the support of Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom conducted a two-day workshop “The World Standards of Journalism in Terms of Armed Conflict”. Beate Apelt, Head of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s for Freedom Office in Ukraine and Belarus, told about a phenomenon of political foundation in Germany and why political education matters, in particular, for Ukrainian citizens.

“Currently, the journalists of Ukraine, apart from professional skills, are in need of courage,” pointed out Serhii Tomilenko, Head of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU). “Physical attacks against reporters on the background of a systematic impunity are drawing the attention to journalism solidarity development. Thus, such regular workshops of the AUP in partnership with NUJU provide a good chance to our colleagues to gain knowledge on standards and protection of our activity.”

Andrii Yurychko, media coach, lecturer at the Institute of Journalism, T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University, shared his own experience of work during armed conflicts. In particular, expert explained the peculiarities of working in hotspots abroad.

“A journalist must realize one’s mission and hold responsibility for the information provided to citizens. I am sure, this is not just a profession, it is one’s calling! Therefore, a journalist should be ready, when in any country there are those who never want people to know the truth,” told Andrii Yurychko.

A three-year joint large-scaled project of the Academy of Ukrainian Press and Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany) is aimed at re-training of Ukrainian journalists.
