Academy of Ukrainian Press: We stand in solidarity with the media and journalists of Ukraine!

25.02.2025

The war did not stop the journalistic pen, it sharpened it. Three years ago, russian aggression invaded not only our land, but also our information space, seeking to stifle the voice of Ukrainian journalism. But the media, like our country, are standing firm.

The Academy of Ukrainian Press is proud to confirm its full support for the key points of the resolution adopted by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) at an international online conference on 13 February 2025. These are not just words of solidarity, they are a call to action, because every line of this resolution is the blood and sweat of our colleagues who risk their lives every day to carry publications and information through the darkness of war.

The Academy of Ukrainian Press has devoted a lot of effort to the development and support of Ukrainian journalism, and sees the urgent challenges our colleagues face: from physical threats on the frontline to the information blockade and economic crisis of independent media. The NUJU resolution clearly outlines these dangers, demanding international attention and concrete action:

Release of captured journalists. Russian terror knows no bounds – the abduction, torture, and illegal detention of our colleagues are crimes against humanity. We call on the international community to impose tough sanctions and take immediate steps to free them.

Financial stability of the media. Independent media outlets are the backbone of democracy, but the war is crippling their economies. Urgent funding, especially for local newspapers in the frontline areas, is an investment not only in information security, but also in Ukraine's very survival.

Psychological support.  Burnout, PTSD - war leaves deep scars on the mental state of journalists. Creating systemic assistance and access to specialised services is our duty to those who protect information from distortion.

Technological modernisation. The new information age requires adaptation. Supporting innovative technologies and ethical use of artificial intelligence is the way to strengthen the Ukrainian media space.

- “The Academy of Ukrainian Press supports the active implementation of all the initiatives announced”, said Valeriy Ivanov, President of the AUP, Doctor of Philology, Professor, “We support the efforts of the NUJU, international organisations and governments to create mechanisms for the long-term support, protection and development of Ukrainian journalism. Our professional work is our most powerful weapon, and we will defend it to the last victorious letter.”
