News topics. The April’s second week 63% of news packages were related to political events in Ukraine (in February – 39%, in December – 63%, in November – 21%, in September – 13%). STB has the highest share – 74%, 1+1 has the lowest one – 57%. 40% of reports are related to domestic policy, public administration bodies’ activities (in February the share was 39%, in December 2013 – 64%, in November – 33%). The news’ prevailing topics included relationships with Russia (8%), on the events in Donetsk and Luhansk – 7% each. The share of the news reports from Eastern regions of Ukraine constituted 40% of news; from Kyiv – 28%.
Attention to election.. The attention to Presidential election’s share is 13%. Inter features the biggest one (17%), followed by TRC Ukraine and ICTV (16% each); the lowest one is observed at Pershy Natsionalny (6%).
News coverage standards. 21% пof the news reports included several viewpoints (February’s share was 15%). Inter features the highest (29%) followed by TRC Ukraine and STB (25% each). 18 key events were discussed in news from different viewpoints (February’s number was 20, December 2013 – 24). The mixed reports were mostly related to takeover of the Supreme Court, takeover of the CPU office, activities by O. Tsaryov.
Political institutions, parties and figures. Attention to political parties, political figures and political institutions constitutes 32%, 53%, 80% respectively (in February - 35%, 46%, 72%, in December - 45%, 61%, 84%). Enforcement agencies are most frequently mentioned – 35% (in February - 27%, in December - 40%). The doubtful and negative evaluations were mostly related to the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court - 44% (in February – judicial system – 24%, in December – to the Cabinet of Ministers – 47%). Positive evaluations were mostly related to Ukraine – 21%. Political institutions were most critically evaluated by TVi – 18%.
Attention rating. The leaders of news programs in April are as follows – New ruling authorities – 10% and Party of Regions – 7% (in February – the Opposition in general – 12% and Batkivshchyna – 9%). The New Authorities often received both negative and positive feedback – 6% each. A. Yatsenyuk and O. Turchynov have been provided with biggest share of attention in news programs – 8% each followed by V. Yanukovych – 6% (in February – V. Yanukovych was the leader (16%) followed by A. Yatsenyuk – 6%). The doubtful and negative context was mostly attached to the reports covering V. Yanukovych (76%) and O. Tsaryov (64%). The largest share of direct speech was allocated to A. Yatsenyuk (10%), O. Turchynov (6%) and R. Akhmetov (5%). In general, the attention to the ruling authorities exceeded that to the opposition by 2.4 times – 55% vs. 23% (in February it was by 2 times more, in December – by 2.1 times more, in November – by 1.6 times more, in September – by 2.8 times more than that to the opposition). 4% is the share of attention to Anti-Maydan supporters (“federalists”).
Attention rating to Presidential election candidates. It was Yu. Tymoshenko (5%) who was most frequently mentioned among Presidential election candidates followed by P. Poroshenko and M. Dobkin – 4% each. The news reports have ever mentioned A. Hrynenko, V. Konovalyuk, V. Kuybida, O. Klymenko, M. Malomuzh, Z. Shkiryak and V. Tsushko. Doubtful and negative comments were related to O. Tsaryov (64%), P. Symonenko (43%) and D. Yarosh (40%). The candidates receive the most prolific coverage by Inter channel.
Direct speech allocated for Presidential election candidates. 14 candidates were allocated with direct speech in the news of April’s second week. The biggest share of direct speech was allocated for P. Poroshenko followed by Yu. Tymoshenko (16%) and M. Dobkin (15%).
Direct speech in the news. The direct speech timing allocated for politicians in April was 11,378 s exceeding the amount in February – 5,873 s by 1.9 times (December – 8,597 s, in November – 5,117 s, in September – 1,866 s, in June – 4,084 s, in May – 4,808 s, in April – 5,153 s). 24% of all mentions about politicians are related to VO Batkivshchyna (in February - 19%, in December - 15%), 20% belong to Party of Regions (in February - 31% on PoR, in December - 35%). 21% is the direct speech of Batkivshchyna faction and party (in February - 24%, in December - 13%). Also 21% belongs to Party of Regions representatives (in February - 28%, in December - 49%). In general, the share of the direct speech allocated for the ruling authorities exceeds that of the opposition by 2.6 times – 55% vs. 21% (in February – 1.6 times, in December - by 3.1 times, in November - by 1.6 times, in September - by 4.3 times). 6% is the direct speech allocated for Anti-Maydan supporters (“federalists”).
The monitoring survey covering TV news broadcast by eight most popular Ukrainian channels in April 2014 is the part of the on-going media monitoring conducted by Academy of Ukrainian Press since 2002.
The presented survey was conducted by the AUP with engagement of the researchers of the Institute of Sociology, NANU. The content analysis methodology has been applied focusing on prime time news broadcast by eight most popular Ukrainian TV channels – Inter, 1+1, Novy Channel, Ukraine, STB, ICTV, Pershy Natsionalny and TVi.
