The Academy of Ukrainian Press together with the researchers of the Sociology Institute of MES of Ukraine provided content analysis of the prime-time (19:00-23:00) news on eight major Ukrainian TV channels. The selected channels were INTER, 1+1, Novyy, Ukrayina, STB, ICTV, Pershyy natsionalnyy and 5 channel. Content analysis allowed making of several decisions considering the main content of news. The two thirds (64%) of news stream of the second week of October were political news of Ukraine. The percentage of messages balance retains in a low mark. Only 10% of all messages had more than one point of view on the problem. In fact, it is one message of ten broadcasted. It should be noted that in April the percentage of balance reached 21% and in the end of September it was 12%. War on the East of Ukraine continues to be the top topic of messages like in September and appears in 28% of messages as the main topic. It also appears as an additional topic in 27% of messages. The attention to elections to Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has markedly increased. Elections appear as the main topic in 13% of messages and as an additional topic – in 7% of messages (in September 4% and 3% respectively). If the elections were the main topic, legitimacy was not mentioned in 97% of cases (94% in the end of September). If the elections were an additional topic, legitimacy wasn’t put into doubt in 94% of cases (see Picture 1).
The attention to political parties and political persons increased right before the elections compared to September, while attention to political institutions remained the same. Among political institutions were often mentioned force departments – 37%, President (19%) and Verkhovna Rada – 15%. Doubtful and negative assessments were often addressed to the Cabinet of Ministers (43%) and local authorities (33%). Focus leaders of news programs of the second week of October among the political organizations were Opozytsiynyy Block (7%) and UU Batkivshchyna (5%). In the end of September the focus leaders were DNR (4%), UU Batkivshchyna and Partiya Rehioniv – 3%. Among the political persons the most attention was paid to P. Poroshenko – 17% (13% in the end of September), A. Yatsenyuk – 7% (6% in the end of September) and A. Lysenko – 5% (5% in the end of September). Ironic and negative assessments were often addressed to H. Korban (100%), V. Yanukovych (74%), A. Sadovyy (70%) and O. Lyashko (42%). Content analysis showed that during the second week of October attention to the representatives of ruling coalition was 6.5 times higher that to the opposition. Focus leaders were the representatives of Narodnyy Front, Opozytsiynyy Block and Block of P. Poroshenko. It should be also noted that the overall share of authorities’ direct speech was 3.4 times bigger than opposition representatives’. The biggest share of direct speech had the representatives of Opozytsiynyy Block – 16% (mostly on INTER – 37% and Ukrayina – 26%), Narodnyy Front – 12% (mostly on Novyy, 1+1, 5 Channel – 17-19%), Block of P. Poroshenko together with the President’s direct speech – 13% (mostly on 1+1, 5 Channel, STB – 21-24%). The direct speech of political leaders makes a big share of overall direct speech of their parties (see Picture 2).
