The Academy of Ukrainian Press together with the researchers of the Sociology Institute of MES of Ukraine provided content analysis of the prime-time news on eight major Ukrainian TV channels. The selected channels were INTER, 1+1, Novyy, Ukrayina, STB, ICTV, Pershyy natsionalnyy and 5 channel. Content analysis allowed making of several decisions considering the main content of news. Thus, 54% of news stream of the last week of September were political news of Ukraine. Unfortunately, the percentage of balance is very low. Only 12% of these had more than one point of view on the problem. War on the East of Ukraine continues to be the main topic of messages, while elections to the Vekhovna Rada as the main topic appear only in 4% of messages. It also appears as an additional topic in 3% of messages. It’s worth to dwell on some major channels. Content analysis has shown that the biggest amount of political news broadcasted ICTV. Slightly smaller shares have INTER and 5 Channel. As for the topic of elections, the biggest amount of news broadcasted INTER and Ukrayina (see Picture.1).
When it comes to the military conflict the greatest attention get armed forces, government and its bodies, wounded and dead. They get all positive lexicons such as «patriots», «activists» and «volunteers». DNR and LNR are still constant leaders in the negative messages. They get such lexicons as «terrorists», «saboteurs», «mercenaries», «militants» (see Picture. 2).
The leaders of attention among political organizations became DNR. It got 4% of messages. In comparison: political union Batkivshchyna and Partiya Rehioniv appeared only in 3% of the messages. Among the political leaders nothing much changes and surprised. The most attention got P. Poroshenko and A. Yatsenyuk. Relatively fewer messages were about A. Lysenko, V. Yanukovych, M. Knyazhytskyy and H. Kernes. The highest indicators of direct speech had the central government – 24%. Narodnyy Front is a leader when it comes to direct speeches followed by Opozytsiynyy Block, Block Petra Poroshenka and Batkivshchina. Content analysis showed that the most respect to professional standards have STB and INTER. Please note that general amount of balanced messages in late September reached 12% while INTER and STB got 19% and 26% respectively. It worth to mention that obtained information as a result of content analysis is not the opinion of experts. It conducts to a minimal error.
