The Academy of Ukrainian Press, with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, held the first three-day webinar, "Interactive Forms and Methods in Teaching Journalism", on October 3-5, 2023.
Together with the trainers, the participants transformed the old lecturer-mentor role model into a mentor-trainer-partner model and tried out various author's exercises, games, reflective experiments, brainstorming sessions, quizzes, watching videos, and reviewing resonant cases.
Valeriy Ivanov, President of the Academy of Ukrainian Press, Doctor of Philology, and Professor, emphasized the importance of adhering to the standards of journalism in times of war, as this is how journalists fulfil their duty to the public to inform it honestly.
Media expert at the Academy of Ukrainian Press, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Social Communications at Mariupol State University Tetiana Ivanova commented: "The value of the event, in my opinion, is that professionals and participants of the webinar came together to discuss relevant topics for journalists during the war. Namely, what should a journalist be... an informant or a propagandist? Is the essence of journalistic standards changing during the Russian full-scale invasion? And if it does, where is the line between human ethics and journalistic standards? How do we recognize and counteract enemy propaganda? How do we maintain people's trust and respect for the media and journalism in the era of post-truth and post-journalism? Our participants discussed all these questions without losing sight of the main goal of the webinar: how to present all these topics to their students interactively, methodically and professionally."
Andriy Yurychko, a media trainer, journalist, PhD in philology, and lecturer at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, said: "I will not deny that journalism is a creative profession. But when it comes to learning and mastering specific professional techniques, it requires training, preparation and repetition. With the support of the FNF, we have developed a number of interactive exercises that can be used in journalism classes and with students in practical classes."
