Eight webinars of the "Historical Paradox" training programme - DONE!
For two weeks, the Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP), with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the German Foreign Office and Civil Society Cooperation, helped Ukrainians develop scepticism in big data!
What is a paradox? A paradox is a statement that does not coincide with generally accepted ideas and an opinion that contradicts (sometimes only at first glance) common sense.
The following topics were chosen to work with each group of participants: the Titanic disaster, the death of Princess Diana, the Kennedy assassination, and the death of Marilyn Monroe. Why?
These stories are an exemplary model of information literacy and an example of working with sources because there are many different responses and other assessments of the fates and problems of the characters. Many facts tell us what happened almost up to the hour of the tragedy. But these facts are interpreted in different ways. There are different versions. It is essential to learn to compare them.
That's what we offered our participants to do - to doubt or, on the contrary, to be convinced of specific facts. It is not without reason that it is not the one who creates a history that distributes its roles but the one who writes it.
The historical paradox clearly shows how things change. If high-profile events occur in a society, the truth about them can be revealed many years later. One of the perpetrators of lies is the media, which destroys or creates images for political, economic and other purposes. Today, the mechanics of propaganda have not changed; it has only been equipped with more powerful weapons that generate new victims.
What does media literacy like? To take revenge on those who are not familiar with it.
The AUP President Valeriy Ivanov and AUP Project Coordinator and programme author Yulia Kulyk provided new mechanisms for critical thinking so that participants would remember to keep a fresh perspective. They were encouraged to contact external information providers, seek monetisation, and research personalities. And not to succumb to the paradoxes of humanity.
We don't say goodbye; we say: see you soon!
