The war in Ukraine is the most documented in history. Journalists inform the world, risking their own lives, often under bullets, in cold trenches. Not to fill the news feed, but to let others know the truth! And the price for this is sometimes too high. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 43 journalists have been killed.
43 people will never again make a report of a socially important event, take an interview, or distribute their professional photos or videos. The best tribute to heroes is our memory of them.
This idea of respect and gratitude to the journalists who died since the beginning of the full-scale invasion was embodied by the Academy of Ukrainian Press in the memorial "Carriers of Memory. Fallen Journalists - 2022". The project was first presented in Kyiv, you can read more here: https://www.aup.com.ua/pershiy-v-ukraini-memorial-pamyati-zag/
But we held one-day meetings under the slogan "Journalism profession - a new reality in which there is war" in the regions in late November. The route: November 25 - Cherkasy, November 28 - Lviv, and November 29 - Ivano-Frankivsk. During the events, we discussed with the participants new challenges of the profession, security issues, and wartime ethics and focused in detail on obituaries. 21 stories of journalists are included in the memorial. This is only a small part of what we can do. "Who could have imagined that our country would be attacked, our cities, our people would be destroyed. That is why it is impossible to be indifferent and keep your feelings under control. It is necessary to discuss the challenges of life in which there is now a war and to know the heroes by sight," said Yulia Kulyk, author of the memorial, and project coordinator of the AUP. She focused on the story of each media hero, telling about their lives. The obituaries are also available in the online version, which can be found at the link: https://ijhc-aup.com.ua/uk/memorial-zahyblykh-zhurnalistiv-2022/
"No journalistic material is worth the life of the person who prepared it, - said media trainer, journalist, and lecturer at the National University of Ostroh Academy, head of the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine Serhiy Shturhetskyi, - This principle is repeated by our colleagues from the International Federation of Journalists and journalistic organizations, because the war in Ukraine is so cruel, and Russian aggressors do not adhere to any international rules."
What can we do to perpetuate the memory of the victims? What are the priority steps to be taken to save the lives and health of journalists? The frank conversations in Cherkasy, Lviv, and Ivano-Frankivsk during the presentation of the Memorial provided answers and outlined tasks.
The project was implemented by the Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP) with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Ukraine and Belarus of the German Foreign Office and Civil Society Cooperation in partnership with the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine
